Doagh Island Inishowen Famine Village

Doagh Island is on the Northwest part of Inishowen. Inishowen is not a big farming area and when the famine hit it was that much more devastating. they actually ended up eating seaweed from the sea and other things they could come up. First picture on the left top. In the middle was our guide who stressed time and again how the EU has saved Ireland and it economy. On the right was a typical eviction done throughout Ireland. The constable and landlord would show up with a contaption to try and knock down the door. If the person did not come out it was padlocked and if they were ever seen on the property again it would be destroyed. Many times they would be seen and then the landlord would do just that destroy it and leave the people on the road to starve.

On the bottom row is a poteen maker. Poteen is an illegal form of whiskey made in Irealnd especially in the back country, but in those days it was probably the only thing they could make. In the middle is a scalpeen that is what evicted tennants would live in all along the roads of Ireland during the famine times. On the right was a mass rock. During the penal times in Ireland the Catholic church was not allowed and if a priest were caught saying mass he would be arrested and many tiems executed, so mass was held in the open like this case a mass rock would be used for an altar.
