Derry Northern Ireland is a very famous town, both for today's history and ancient Irish history. It was the site of one of the great sieges in history. During the Jacobite wars James II and his Irish troops besieged the protestant city of Derry for over a year. The city is completely surrounded by a wall as you can see in these pictures. At the time of the siege the mayor of Derry seeing that the town was so overmatched tried to surrender the town to James II, but the apprentice boys of the town refused to do that and locked the gates just as the mayor was about to give up. Derry held out for a year before it was rescued by the British Army and Navy. In the middle picture on the bottom you can see the actual locks that were used to lock the four entrance ways into Derry. |
