Cong, County Mayo

Cong is also the place where any good Irishman should know is where in 1951 The Quiet Man was made starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. On the left is Cohan's Bar although it was never a bar just a front for the movie. In the middle is the bridge John Wayne chases Maureen O'Hara across at the end of the movie and on the right the famous Cong Cross.

If you ever have seen The Quiet Man, you should remember this picture on the left. It is the scene from the opening of the movie when Wayne comes into town on a little carriage and gets off and goes into Cohen's for a beverage. In the middle is the church where he tries to get Maureen O'Hara's attention at the holy water stand in the back of the church. A strange fact indeed is that the church is actually a Church of Ireland church. On the right like most little towns, in fact most town all have an Abbey this one is the graveyard of the Cong Abbey.
