The Burren is one of the most beautiful and most tragic places in Ireland. When Cromwell came into Ireland with his profession army to defeat and massacre a bunch of peasants, and attempt to establish not only Protestantism but Puratism in Ireland he forced all the clans and Irish catholics who owned land to move and not live east of the Shannon river, which put them in The Burren. Their lands were given to various British generals by James 1st son of Queen Mary Queen of Scots and nephew of Queen Elizabeth. As you look at these pictures you will see white rock on these mountains. That is limestone and you can't plant in limestone, also if you notice very few if any trees. The British took them all away also. The people starved until years later when the laws were eased and they could go back cross the Shannon. There was a point when the British and Cromwell were here that one of Cromwell's Generals made a statement that there wasn't enough trees to hang a rebel or enough water to drown one or enough wood to burn one. He had a real problem. On the right top and bottom are more of the castles I mentioned on the previous pages. |
